To the mystery that it all is...
The J. Alden Weir quote “…to the mystery that it all is,” reflects a distinctly American approach to Impressionism that departs from its European roots and embraces an intimate relationship of self to nature through art. Weir’s artistic evolution and body of work is more than a depiction of the ever-changing effects of light, and suggests a deep connection to the land influenced by his strong identity as an American.
As a 2026 Weir Farm Nat'l Historical Park Artist Resident, I was able to see myself as an updated extension of that creative legacy and my work a form of American Impressionism rooted in my identity and experiences. My environmental-centered practice is experiential and informed by 21st century concerns to realize work that reflects an intimate (re)location of self within the ecological and contemporary cultural context of the American landscape.
